PP spun cartridges — also called melt-blown cartridges — are depth filters made by spinning molten polypropylene fibres onto a rotating former. They capture suspended particles such as silt, rust, sediment and scale from suitable liquid streams throughout the thickness of the wall, rather than only at the surface.
Graded density is what makes a depth filter useful. The fibres are laid coarser at the outer surface and progressively finer toward the centre, so larger particles are trapped in the open outer layers and finer particles are retained deeper in. The whole wall does work instead of only the face, which can improve dirt-holding capacity where the product is designed that way. It is a design characteristic, not something every spun cartridge automatically has.
Because the fibres are thermally bonded to each other, a well-made spun cartridge needs no binders, resins or adhesives to hold it together. That matters for water treatment: there is less to extract into the filtrate than in constructions that rely on an adhesive, which is one reason spun cartridges dominate RO pre-filtration in India.
Actual performance depends on the specific cartridge design, feed-water quality, operating pressure and flow rate, the micron rating chosen and the differential-pressure limit at which the cartridge is replaced. Final micron selection should be based on feed-water quality, downstream equipment, process requirement, and the buyer's operating conditions. Retention figures, permitted temperature and maximum differential pressure vary by manufacturer and product and are confirmed against the datasheet of the cartridge quoted.
A PP spun cartridge is nominally rated. That means a 5 micron cartridge typically retains a high proportion of particles at 5 microns under the manufacturer's own test conditions — not that nothing above 5 microns passes. The proportion varies by product and by test method, which is precisely why the figure is called nominal, and why two 5 micron cartridges from different makers can behave visibly differently on the same water.
This matters most when a spun cartridge is compared on price against an absolute-rated pleated membrane cartridge of the same stated micron. They are not the same product at two prices. An absolute-rated cartridge has a defined removal efficiency and is usually seated on an O-ring end cap so that flow cannot bypass the medium — that construction is what the rating depends on. A nominal depth cartridge is built to hold dirt economically. Specifying spun where the process genuinely requires absolute retention is a specification failure; specifying absolute where spun would do wastes money and blinds sooner, because a surface filter has far less depth to load.
The second common error is going finer than the stage downstream requires. Dropping from 5 micron to 1 micron on the same housing does not simply give cleaner water — it fills the cartridge faster, so changeouts get more frequent and the consumable bill rises, often for no benefit the RO membrane can use. If the membrane datasheet asks for a 5 micron guard filter, a 5 micron guard filter is the correct answer.
Judge cartridges the way the plant does: on differential pressure across a run and on how long a set lasts at your feed quality, rather than on the number printed on the box. If a set is blinding far faster than expected, the useful questions are about upstream sediment load and whether a coarser cartridge ahead of the fine one would carry the bulk of it.
Length sets how much medium is in the housing; diameter sets how much dirt it can hold before the differential pressure climbs.

Nominal dimensions vary slightly between manufacturers — a cartridge described as 10-inch may be 9¾ or 9⅞ inches — so confirm the exact length and end-cap style against the housing before ordering. If your feed carries heavy sediment, the better answer is a coarser cartridge ahead of the 5 micron to carry the bulk load, rather than a finer one in its place. Diameter. A Slim cartridge is nominally 2.5 inches in outer diameter and fits standard commercial housings. A Big Blue, also called Jumbo, is nominally 4.5 inches and fits the larger blue housings the name comes from.
The practical difference is dirt-holding. A Big Blue cartridge contains substantially more filter medium than a Slim of the same length, so on sediment-heavy feed it runs considerably longer between changes. It is the right choice where the constraint is how often somebody has to change a cartridge rather than how fine the filtration is. The housings are not interchangeable, so the diameter follows the housing you have.
The housing decides it. Ten inch is the reference size and the others are multiples of it — a 20-inch cartridge holds roughly twice the medium of a 10-inch, a 40-inch roughly four times. Longer cartridges mean fewer elements to change for the same total filtration area, which is why industrial multi-round housings use 30-inch and 40-inch elements.
