PTFE Membrane Cartridges for Gas, Vent, Solvent and Chemical Filtration

PTFE is a fluoropolymer membrane material selected largely for its chemical-resistance characteristics, and it is unusual in being supplied in two forms that do opposite jobs. Hydrophobic PTFE repels water and is commonly used for gas, air and tank-vent duty. Hydrophilic PTFE is surface-modified so it wets with liquid, and is used for aqueous, solvent and chemical filtration.

Getting that fork right is the first decision on this page and the one most often reversed in practice. A hydrophobic element put into liquid duty will not pass liquid until it is forced to, and a hydrophilic element put on a vent loses its water-repellent behaviour and will block when condensate reaches it. They look similar in a housing and behave completely differently, so the form is specified before anything else.

The reason PTFE is reached for at all is chemical resistance — acids, alkalis, solvents and aggressive process chemistry that would attack other membrane materials. That property belongs to the membrane, and it is worth saying plainly that a cartridge is not made only of membrane. Support layers, the cage, the core, the end caps and the O-rings are usually polypropylene or another polymer, and in most cases those set the real compatibility and temperature envelope rather than the PTFE does.

Final cartridge selection must be based on the actual process fluid or gas, its concentration, the operating temperature and pressure, the filtration target, and the manufacturer's documentation for the specific product. Pore ratings and how they are defined, retention behaviour, gas and liquid flow, pressure drop and sterilization limits all vary by product model — none of them follows from the material name.

A hydrophobic vent filter fails wet — and it fails closed

Start with what the cartridge is actually made of, because it is the first thing an overclaim hides. PTFE membrane resists an unusually wide range of chemistry, and it is tempting to read that as the cartridge being chemically universal. It is not. The support layers, cage, core, end caps and O-rings are generally polypropylene or another polymer, and on most aggressive duties those reach their limit long before the membrane does. Check compatibility and temperature against the full construction — including the seal material, which is frequently the weakest link and the easiest thing to specify wrongly.

Then the failure mode that makes vent filters different from every other cartridge on this site. A hydrophobic vent works because it repels water: gas passes, moisture does not. When the membrane does become wetted — by condensate on a cooling tank, by steam that was not dried off after sterilisation, by liquid carryover or aerosol during a transfer — flow through it drops sharply. The filter has not torn or fouled in the ordinary sense. It has simply stopped passing gas at the rate the tank needs.

That matters because of what a tank vent is for. When liquid is pumped out of a closed vessel, air has to come in at the same volumetric rate or the vessel goes into vacuum, and tanks are far weaker in vacuum than in pressure — a vent that cannot breathe can deform or collapse one. Filling produces the opposite problem. So a vent filter is sized on the fastest liquid transfer rate the vessel will ever see, plus any steam or CIP flow, not on the tank's volume and not on what the pipe size suggests. If the vessel has a rapid-empty pump, that pump sets the vent size.

The practical measures follow from that. Heated or steam-jacketed vent housings exist precisely to keep the membrane dry in condensing service. After steam sterilisation the element should be dried before the vessel is put back into transfer duty rather than immediately afterwards. And note that integrity testing a hydrophobic filter is not the same procedure as testing a wetted hydrophilic one — the methods differ, and both the method and its values must come from that specific product's guide rather than from a general figure.

What is a PTFE membrane filter cartridge?

A filtration element built from polytetrafluoroethylene membrane, pleated into a standard cartridge envelope with end caps that seat into a matching housing. PTFE is chosen mainly for its chemical-resistance characteristics, which let it handle acids, alkalis and solvents that would attack other membrane materials.

It is supplied in two distinct forms. Hydrophobic PTFE repels water and is used for gas, air and tank-vent duty. Hydrophilic PTFE is surface-modified to wet out and pass liquid, and is used for aqueous, solvent and chemical filtration. The two are not interchangeable, so the form is part of the specification rather than a detail.

What is the difference between hydrophobic and hydrophilic PTFE filters?

Whether the membrane repels water or wets with it. Hydrophobic PTFE will not allow aqueous liquid through without substantial applied pressure, which is exactly the property wanted on a vent: gas passes freely while moisture is held back, so the vent keeps working in humid service.

Hydrophilic PTFE has been surface-modified so liquid wets the membrane and flows through it, while the underlying chemical resistance is retained. That combination is why it is specified for solvent and aggressive-chemistry liquid duty rather than a conventional hydrophilic membrane. Putting either in the other's job fails: a hydrophobic element will not pass your liquid, and a hydrophilic element on a vent blocks as soon as condensate reaches it.

Which PTFE filter is suitable for air and tank-vent applications?

Hydrophobic PTFE, because a vent has to keep passing gas in service that is often humid or condensing, and a wettable membrane would block. The pore rating follows the objective — 0.22 micron where the vent is protecting a vessel from airborne contamination, coarser where the duty is particulate only.

Sizing matters more than on most cartridges. A vent must pass gas at least as fast as liquid leaves the vessel, or the tank goes into vacuum — and tanks are considerably weaker in vacuum than in pressure. Size on the fastest transfer rate the vessel will see plus any steam or CIP flow, not on tank volume. In condensing service a heated or jacketed housing keeps the membrane dry, and the element should be dried after steam sterilisation before the vessel returns to transfer duty.

What is the difference between Code 7, Code 3, and DOE filter cartridges?

Code 3 uses a 222 O-ring with a flat end.

The codes are not interchangeable, and a Code 7 element will not seat in a Code 3 or DOE housing. Where a defined retention is the point, positive O-ring retention is normally specified, because a compression seal that relaxes leaves a bypass path around the membrane and the rating then means nothing. Confirm the code, and the seal material, against the housing before ordering.

What is an integrity test for a PTFE vent or membrane filter?

A non-destructive measurement on the installed filter, correlated by the manufacturer to the retention testing performed on that product, confirming the membrane and its seals are intact and that the assembly matches the condition the data applies to.

The method depends on the form. A wetted hydrophilic filter is generally tested by bubble point, diffusion or pressure hold. A hydrophobic filter cannot simply be water-wetted the same way, so hydrophobic elements are commonly tested by a water intrusion method or by an alcohol-based wetting procedure, depending on the product. Because both the method and its limits are product-specific, they must come from that item's own guide rather than from a general figure. An integrity test confirms the filter is intact; it does not by itself establish that your process is validated.
