One practical point decides how long the filter lasts and how much it costs to run. A 0.22 micron membrane is the finest and most expensive element in most trains, and it blinds quickly if it is asked to carry bulk particulate. Where the load is anything but light, it belongs behind appropriate pre-filtration — a depth or spun element for gross solids, often with a coarser membrane or pleated stage between. Specifying the final filter without the stage in front of it is the commonest reason a 0.22 cartridge is replaced far sooner than it should be.

This is the single most consequential misunderstanding on this product, and it is worth being blunt about. Sterilizing-grade is not a property of a pore size. It is a designation a manufacturer earns for a specific product, by challenging that filter with bacteria — conventionally Brevundimonas diminuta at a defined loading per unit of filter area, by the method described in ASTM F838 — and demonstrating sterile effluent under stated conditions of fluid, flow, pressure and time. A cartridge that has not been through that programme is a 0.22 micron filter. It is not a sterilizing filter, whatever the label says.
The rating itself is also less absolute than it looks. There is no instrument that measures a membrane and returns "0.22"; the number is a designation the manufacturer applies, correlated to its own retention testing. That is why you will see 0.2 µm and 0.22 µm used by different makers for products in the same class, and why two cartridges both marked 0.22 micron cannot be treated as interchangeable on the strength of the number. Retention at this scale is not pure sieving either — adsorptive capture contributes, and it varies with the fluid, the differential pressure and how long the filtration runs, which is precisely why validation is done on the process rather than inferred from the specification.
Integrity testing is what connects the installed filter back to that work. A bubble point, diffusion or pressure-hold measurement is correlated by the manufacturer to the retention testing performed on that product, so passing it confirms the membrane and its seals are intact and match the condition the data applies to. The values are product-specific and must come from that item's own guide. Note too that a hydrophobic filter is not tested the same way a wetted hydrophilic one is. And an integrity test tells you the filter is sound; it does not by itself establish that your process is validated.
What this means in practice is straightforward. If the duty is genuinely sterilizing — final filtration of a product, injectable or WFI-related use, aseptic processing — the requirement is a named product with a validation guide, a documented integrity-test method and limits, and your own QA's approval of the change. If the duty is fine particulate reduction, clarification or protecting a downstream stage, a 0.22 micron cartridge is often exactly right and none of that apparatus is needed. Injectable final filtration, WFI-related use, sterile drug manufacturing, aseptic processing and defined microbial-retention requirements are not covered by a pore rating: they require a product validated for that use, an integrity-test regime, and process approval by the buyer's QA and validation function.

Hydrophilic PTFE is surface-modified to pass liquid while keeping PTFE's chemical resistance, so it suits solvents, acids and alkalis. Nylon is broadly compatible across aqueous and many organic fluids and is naturally wettable.
Beyond compatibility, the material governs wetting behaviour, flow for a given pressure drop, protein and analyte binding and extractables behaviour. Because the rating is the same across all of them, the material is effectively the whole selection — and confirming compatibility against the full cartridge construction matters, since supports, cage, core, end caps and seals are frequently a different polymer from the membrane.
Hydrophobic PTFE, because a vent has to keep passing gas in service that is often humid or condensing, and a wettable membrane would block as soon as condensate reached it.
Sizing matters more than on most cartridges. A vent must pass gas at least as fast as liquid leaves the vessel, or the tank goes into vacuum — and tanks are considerably weaker in vacuum than in pressure. Size on the fastest transfer rate the vessel will see plus any steam or CIP flow, not on tank volume. In condensing service a heated or jacketed housing keeps the membrane dry, and the element should be dried after steam sterilisation before the vessel returns to transfer duty.
Usually hydrophilic PTFE, and in some duties Nylon, where the selected product is designed and documented for that fluid. Hydrophilic PTFE wets with liquid while retaining the chemical resistance that made PTFE the choice, which is what suits it to solvents, acids, alkalis and reagents.
Confirm compatibility against the whole cartridge rather than the membrane alone. Support layers, cage, core, end caps and O-rings are usually polypropylene or another polymer, and on aggressive chemistry those commonly reach their limit before the membrane does — the seal material in particular is frequently the weakest component and the easiest to specify wrongly. Where the fluid is the product and trace contamination matters, ask for extractables information as well as a compatibility chart.
They describe how the cartridge seals into the housing. DOE — double open end — is a plain element sealed by compression between plates. Code 7 has a 226 O-ring at one end with a bayonet lock and a fin or spear at the other, positively locating the element so it cannot lift or bypass under flow or a pressure surge. Code 3 uses a 222 O-ring with a flat end.
The codes are not interchangeable, and a Code 7 element will not seat in a Code 3 or DOE housing. Where a defined retention is the point, positive O-ring retention is normally specified, because a compression seal that relaxes leaves a bypass path around the membrane and the rating then means nothing. Confirm the code, and the seal material, against the housing before ordering.
