ScientificEdge is a trusted B2B distributor and sourcing partner in India supporting the supply of suitable brackish water RO membranes, elements, pressure vessels, and filtration components based on feed water TDS, flux, salt rejection, brand preference, availability, technical documentation, and buyer requirements.

Answer first

Trusted BWRO Membrane Distribution for Industrial and Commercial Water Treatment

Brackish water RO membranes are spiral-wound polyamide thin-film composite elements applied to feed water typically between 1,000 ppm and 10,000+ ppm TDS. ScientificEdge is a trusted B2B distributor and sourcing partner in India, connecting water treatment plant OEMs, system integrators and industrial facilities with the BWRO element that matches their feed water and plant design.

Selecting the correct element is a calculation, not a catalogue choice. It depends on raw water chemistry, the target permeate flow rate in LPH, GPD or m³/hr, the required salt rejection percentage, the operating pressure in bar or psi, the cross-flow velocity the array delivers, and the fouling potential of the feed.

Those variables interact. Pushing recovery raises the concentration factor in the reject, which is where hardness, silica, sulphate and barium approach saturation and decide whether the array scales. Feed temperature moves both flux and rejection. A membrane specified from TDS alone, without the rest of the analysis, is specified from one number out of six.

Final element selection should be based on your feed water analytical report, the plant design capacity, the vessel array configuration, any approved-vendor or brand preference, and the operating parameters the plant actually runs at. Send those with the enquiry and the quotation can be prepared against your duty rather than against an assumption.

Specification

Brackish Water RO Membranes by Element Type and Specification

Six element classes cover almost every brackish-water duty in India. The differences that matter are rejection, operating pressure and how the element behaves on a fouling feed.

The rule that decides 4040 against 8040

It is a plant-flow decision rather than a quality one. An 8040 element carries roughly four times the active area of a 4040 of the same length, so an 8040 array reaches a given permeate flow with about a quarter of the elements and a quarter of the vessels — fewer interconnections, fewer seals and less to go wrong.

4040 earns its place where plant room space is tight, where the plant is small enough that an 8040 vessel would be oversized, or where capacity is added in stages. Below roughly 5 m³/h the 4040 usually wins on practicality; above it the 8040 usually wins on cost per litre.

What cannot be done is mixing sizes within an array. Vessel bore, adapters and brine seals are all size-specific, so changing element size is a vessel change. State the size with the enquiry and the vessel and seal kit are quoted to match.

On the left, four narrow 4040 membrane pressure vessels stacked in a frame, labelled four vessels. On the right, a single wide 8040 vessel drawn to the same length at twice the diameter, labelled one vessel. A badge between them notes that an 8040 element carries about four times the active area of a 4040 of the same length, so the same permeate flow needs about a quarter of the vessels. A strip below notes that vessel bore, adapters and brine seals are size-specific, so element sizes cannot be mixed within an array.SAME PERMEATE DUTY40404 INCH DIAMETER4 VESSELS×4AREA80408 INCH DIAMETER1 VESSELBELOW ~5 m³/h · 4040 ON PRACTICALITYABOVE ~5 m³/h · 8040 ON COST PER LITREDO NOT MIX SIZES IN AN ARRAYBore, adapters and brine seals are size-specific

Frequently asked

Brackish Water RO Membranes — Common Questions

Why choose ScientificEdge as your B2B brackish water RO membrane distributor in India?

ScientificEdge is a trusted B2B distributor and sourcing partner supporting membrane elements, pressure vessels, antiscalants, cartridge filters and RO plant spares from a single desk, so a retrofit or a new build does not have to be split across several vendors.

The practical value is in selection and paperwork: matching feed TDS, flux and cross-flow to the right element variant, coordinating datasheets and test reports where the brand issues them, and invoicing in the form your procurement process needs.

What is the difference between 4040 and 8040 brackish water RO membranes?

It is element size and therefore plant flow. A 4040 is 4 inches in diameter and 40 inches long; an 8040 is 8 inches by 40 inches and carries roughly four times the active area, so it reaches a given permeate flow with about a quarter of the elements and vessels.

4040 suits compact and staged plants, typically below about 5 m³/h. 8040 suits industrial plants above that, where fewer vessels means fewer interconnections and seals. Element size cannot be mixed within an array, because vessel bore, adapters and brine seals are all size-specific.

What feed water TDS range are brackish water RO (BWRO) membranes designed for?

Typically 1,000 ppm to 10,000+ ppm TDS, which covers most inland borewell, municipal and process feed in India. Above roughly 10,000 ppm the design moves toward high-rejection brackish or seawater elements at higher pressure.

TDS sets the operating pressure, but it does not set the recovery. Hardness, silica, sulphate and barium concentrate in the reject and usually reach saturation before salinity becomes limiting, so those parameters decide how far recovery can be pushed.

How do Low Energy (LE) RO membranes differ from standard High Rejection BWRO membranes?

Low energy elements deliver comparable rejection at a lower applied pressure, typically around 100 to 150 psi against the higher pressure a standard element needs, which reduces pump duty and running cost.

The trade is a small reduction in rejection. On a continuously running plant at low feed TDS the energy saving usually repays it; on an intermittent plant, or where permeate quality drives the specification for an EDI stage downstream, the standard high-rejection element is often the better choice.

When should Fouling Resistant (FR) BWRO membranes be selected for an industrial plant?

Whenever the feed carries a significant organic or biological load — treated effluent from an ETP or STP, wastewater recycling, high-silica streams, or any plant whose history shows differential pressure climbing between cleans.

FR construction uses a wider feed spacer and a modified surface charge so foulants adhere less and clean off more completely. It is not a substitute for pre-treatment: on effluent recycle the normal arrangement is still a UF or MBR barrier ahead of the RO.

Can ScientificEdge help select the right membrane based on feed water quality and plant capacity?

Yes. Send the feed water analytical report, the plant design capacity, the vessel array configuration and the operating parameters, and the element class, size and quantity can be worked against that duty.

Where the analysis is incomplete we will tell you which parameter is missing rather than assume a value. Silica and hardness are the two most often absent from borewell reports, and both cap recovery.

Can I request technical datasheets and salt rejection test reports for BWRO membranes?

Yes. Technical datasheets, nominal salt rejection specifications, element dimensions and manufacturer test reports can be coordinated where the respective brand makes them available for the supplied batch.

Availability depends on the brand, the product and the batch, so it is confirmed once stock and brand specifications are established rather than promised in advance. State the documentation you need at enquiry so it is arranged with the quotation.

Can ScientificEdge support bulk distributor pricing and recurring supply for water treatment OEMs and tenders?

Yes. Bulk orders, recurring OEM supply, rate contracts, institutional purchases and tender requirements are all supported, with GST-compliant billing and pan-India logistics.

For tender work, send the documentation format your procurement process requires along with the technical scope, so the quotation is issued in a form you can submit without rework.

Which membrane brands can ScientificEdge source?

Sourcing and distribution enquiries are supported for reputed global and domestic brands including DuPont Filmtec, Hydranautics (Nitto), Toray, LG Chem, Vontron, Toyobo and CSM, along with equivalent high-performance options.

This is subject to stock availability, buyer specification, technical compatibility and documentation, and does not indicate authorised distribution, official dealership or an exclusive partnership with any brand.

Do you deliver brackish water RO membranes and accessories across India?

Yes. Despatch is coordinated from Delhi NCR across India, covering plant, project, institutional and commercial sites.

Lead time is confirmed per line item at quotation stage, because stocked consumable lines and made-to-order elements differ substantially. Tell us the delivery city and the target timeline with the enquiry.
