Two numbers start the selection — flow in cubic metres per hour and total dynamic head in bar or metres — but they do not finish it. The fluid decides the metallurgy, and this is where money is most often wasted in both directions: SS316 is right for brackish RO and is not adequate for continuous seawater duty, where chloride levels call for duplex 2205 or super duplex 2507. Ordering duplex for a borewell plant is an expensive way to be careful; ordering SS316 for a seawater intake is a short-lived pump.

The instinct on a pump enquiry is to add margin: round the flow up, add a few metres of head for safety, take the next model in the range. It feels prudent and it is the single most costly habit in pump procurement, because a pump that is too large does not simply run at its rating and waste nothing. It runs where its curve meets the system — far to the left of its best efficiency point — and is then throttled back with a valve to bring the flow down.
That has three costs, and they all recur. The obvious one is energy: throttling converts electrical power into pressure drop across a valve, every hour the plant runs. The second is mechanical — a centrifugal pump operating well left of best efficiency carries high radial load on the impeller, which deflects the shaft, works the mechanical seal and shortens bearing life. The third is that the failures this produces look like poor pump quality rather than poor selection, so the replacement is usually the same oversized model.
Where the duty genuinely varies — and in RO it does, because required feed pressure rises as membranes age and falls as water warms — the right answer is a correctly sized pump on a variable frequency drive, not a bigger pump with a throttling valve. The affinity laws are unusually generous here: flow falls in proportion to speed but power falls with its cube, so trimming speed by a fifth cuts absorbed power by roughly half. No throttling arrangement comes close.
So select against the curve rather than against a number. Aim for the duty point to sit within roughly 70 to 120 percent of best efficiency flow, confirm NPSH available exceeds NPSH required with a real margin rather than by a hair, and if the plant needs range, buy the range as speed control instead of as extra impeller stages.

SS304 suits clean, low-chloride water and is the economical choice for municipal and low-TDS borewell duty. SS316 adds molybdenum, which markedly improves resistance to chloride pitting, and is the normal specification for brackish water RO across most of India.
Duplex 2205 and super duplex 2507 have a mixed austenitic-ferritic structure giving both higher strength and far greater chloride resistance. That matters on seawater: at 35,000 ppm and above, SS316 is not adequate for continuous service and will pit and eventually crack, so duplex or super duplex is the realistic comparison for SWRO intake and ZLD brine duty. Going the other way is also a real cost — specifying duplex for a borewell plant buys corrosion resistance the water will never test.

NPSH is the margin between the pressure of the liquid arriving at the pump suction and the pressure at which that liquid would boil at its temperature. NPSH available is a property of your installation — tank level, suction line length and diameter, fittings, altitude and fluid temperature. NPSH required is a property of the pump and rises with flow.
If available falls below required, liquid flashes to vapour at the impeller eye and the bubbles collapse violently as pressure recovers. That is cavitation: it sounds like gravel in the pump, erodes impeller material, damages seals and bearings, and destroys performance. Keep NPSH available above NPSH required with a genuine margin — commonly half a metre to a metre, more on hot or volatile liquids. Hot water is the usual trap: the same installation that is comfortable at 25 °C can cavitate at 70 °C because the boiling pressure has risen.
A vertical multistage centrifugal pump adds pressure kinetically, stage by stage, through stacked impellers. Flow varies with the system resistance it meets, it is comparatively quiet and low-maintenance, and it is the standard answer for brackish RO and boiler pre-treatment to roughly 25 or 30 bar. Closing the discharge simply pushes it to shut-off head without harm for a short period.
A triplex plunger pump is positive displacement: three plungers deliver a near-fixed volume per revolution regardless of pressure, which is how it reaches hundreds of bar. That also means it must never run against a closed discharge — pressure will rise until something fails, so a relief valve is not optional. Packing and valves are consumable wear parts. Choose centrifugal where flow is substantial and pressure moderate; choose plunger where pressure is the requirement and flow is modest.
Silicon carbide against silicon carbide is the usual specification for high-TDS, seawater and abrasive-bearing duty. Both faces are hard, so fine suspended solids that would score a softer face have far less effect, and the combination tolerates the brief dry-running that happens during priming better than carbon does.
Carbon against silicon carbide runs with lower friction and suits clean water well, but the carbon face wears quickly where abrasives are present. The elastomer needs its own decision — EPDM for hot water and many chemicals, Viton for hydrocarbons and some acids, and a perfluoroelastomer where neither will do. Confirm the full seal specification against the fluid, temperature and solids content on the manufacturer's data rather than fitting like for like when a seal fails, since an early failure is often telling you the original specification was wrong.
Seawater RO needs roughly 55 to 80 bar to overcome the osmotic pressure of a 35,000 ppm feed, which is well beyond an ordinary vertical multistage pump. Axial piston positive displacement pumps dominate the duty because their efficiency at that pressure is what makes desalination economically viable, with duplex-bodied centrifugal pumps used on larger plants.
The pump is only part of the arrangement. An energy recovery device on the concentrate stream returns much of the pressure energy that would otherwise be throttled to drain, and a booster pump makes up the difference — so the high-pressure pump, the ERD and the booster are specified as a set. Wetted metallurgy across all of them must suit seawater: duplex 2205 or super duplex 2507, not SS316.
