Selection guidance

Blend deliberately rather than under-treating

The common shortcut on packaged water is to run the RO at lower rejection so the product keeps some minerals. That works until the feed changes, because the mineral content of the product then moves with the feed rather than being controlled.

The better arrangement is to treat fully and blend back a measured proportion of filtered feed through a controlled line. Product quality is then set by the blend ratio, which you can adjust, rather than by the feed, which you cannot.

How is a commercial RO plant sized?

On peak hourly draw combined with storage, not on daily average consumption. Commercial demand arrives in short windows, so average-based sizing runs short exactly when demand is highest.

A smaller plant filling a tank across the day is frequently cheaper both to buy and to run than a larger plant sized to meet the peak instantaneously.

What TDS should packaged drinking water have?

IS 10500:2012 sets TDS at 500 mg/L acceptable and 2,000 mg/L permissible in the absence of an alternate source. Design to the acceptable limit — the permissible figure is a tolerance, not a target.

Total hardness under the same standard is 200 mg/L acceptable and 600 mg/L permissible, as CaCO₃.

Why does RO water taste flat, and can that be corrected?

Because reverse osmosis removes the dissolved minerals that give water its taste along with everything else. Fully desalinated permeate also tends to be aggressive to distribution pipework.

The usual correction is a controlled blending line returning a measured proportion of filtered feed, or a remineralisation stage. Both give a product whose mineral content you set rather than inherit from the feed.
