Membrane bioreactor modules

MBR Membranes for Membrane Bioreactors

MBR membranes are submerged flat-sheet or hollow-fibre modules that replace the secondary clarifier in a biological treatment plant, separating biomass from treated water directly. They produce a consistently low-solids effluent that suits reverse osmosis recycle, and typically filter at 0.04 to 0.4 micrometres.

Answer first

What MBR Membranes Are, and How They Are Specified

MBR membranes are submerged flat-sheet or hollow-fibre modules that replace the secondary clarifier in a biological treatment plant, separating biomass from treated water directly. They produce a consistently low-solids effluent that suits reverse osmosis recycle, and typically filter at 0.04 to 0.4 micrometres.

An MBR removes the weakest link in conventional biological treatment. A secondary clarifier relies on sludge settling well, which varies with loading, temperature and sludge age. A membrane barrier does not care whether the sludge settles, so effluent quality stays consistent through conditions that would upset a clarifier.

The consequence downstream is what makes MBR attractive for recycle: RO fed from an MBR sees a far steadier and cleaner feed than RO fed from a clarifier, which shows up directly in cleaning frequency and element life.

Selection guidance

Screen ahead of the membranes, harder than feels necessary

The most common cause of MBR module damage is not fouling, it is debris. Hair, fibre and rag entering the tank wrap around hollow fibres and abrade flat sheets, and once inside the tank they are extremely difficult to remove.

Fine screening ahead of the bioreactor, typically finer than a conventional plant would use, is the cheapest insurance available in this design. Where the influent carries textile fibre or significant hair load, flat sheet is generally the more forgiving format.

Application mapping

Where MBR Membranes Are Used

STP with water recycle

Typical requirement
Consistent effluent for RO recycle
Indicated configuration
MBR replacing the clarifier, then cartridge filtration and fouling-resistant RO

ETP in textile and chemical plants

Typical requirement
High and variable organic load
Indicated configuration
MBR with air scour and a cleaning regime set from observed fouling

Constrained-footprint retrofit

Typical requirement
Higher capacity in existing tankage
Indicated configuration
MBR operating at elevated MLSS to raise treatment capacity per volume
Commercial terms

How This Category Is Quoted

Water treatment does not have a list price, and any supplier quoting one before seeing a feed analysis is quoting a different plant from the one you need.

Pricing basis

On request, and capacity-dependent. Plant pricing moves with capacity, feed water analysis and the recovery target; membranes, cartridges and resins are quoted per element, per lot or per litre of media.

Order quantity

From a single replacement element or a case of cartridges through to full plant scope. Consumable lines are quoted per box or per lot, and the lot size is stated on the quotation.

Lead time

Confirmed per line item at quotation stage. Stocked consumable lines and made-to-order plant differ substantially, so a single blanket lead time for the category would be misleading — the quotation carries the figure for each line.

Invoicing

GST invoice against company or institutional purchase order. Proforma issued where advance payment or internal approval requires it.

Delivery coverage

Despatch from Delhi NCR across India, including plant, project and institutional sites. Delivery city and site access are asked for at enquiry because both affect despatch mode.

Documentation

Technical datasheet for the item quoted, and a test certificate where the principal supplies one with that product. Tender and institutional documentation formats are prepared on request — send the format with the enquiry so the quotation is issued in a form you can submit without rework.

Frequently asked

MBR Membranes — Common Questions

What is the advantage of an MBR over a conventional clarifier?

Consistency and footprint. A membrane barrier separates biomass regardless of how well the sludge settles, so effluent quality holds through loading and temperature changes that would upset a clarifier.

It also allows operation at higher MLSS, typically 8,000 to 12,000 mg/L, which means more treatment capacity in the same tank volume.

Should I choose flat sheet or hollow fibre MBR membranes?

Flat sheet is more tolerant of coarse debris and generally easier to clean manually. Hollow fibre offers more membrane area per unit volume and a smaller footprint.

Where the influent carries hair, rag or textile fibre, flat sheet is usually the more forgiving choice regardless of the area advantage.

Can MBR effluent feed an RO plant directly?

It is the normal arrangement for recycle, with cartridge filtration between the two. MBR permeate is consistently low in solids, which is exactly what an RO element needs.

Use fouling-resistant elements on the RO regardless, because the dissolved organic load in treated effluent remains higher than on a borewell or municipal feed.
