What Melt Blown Cartridges Are, and How They Are Specified

Melt blown cartridges are polypropylene depth filters produced by extruding fibre directly onto a forming core, typically with graded density that is coarser at the outside and finer toward the centre. The graded structure does inside one cartridge what staged filtration does across several: coarse material is captured in the outer layers, progressively finer material deeper in. Melt blown and PP spun are often used interchangeably in conversation and are genuinely close relatives. The practical difference is dirt-holding capacity, and it shows up on high solids loads rather than on clean feed.

Selection guidance

Graded density is not a substitute for a coarse pre-stage

The gradient helps, but it works within one cartridge and one housing. On genuinely turbid feed the outer layers still saturate quickly, and the cartridge blocks earlier than the specification suggests.

Where solids are high enough that a graded cartridge is being considered for its capacity, a separate 25 µm pre-stage usually delivers more life per rupee than upgrading the fine stage. Use graded density to extend a well-staged train, not to rescue an unstaged one.

What is the difference between melt blown and PP spun cartridges?

Both are polypropylene depth filters. Melt blown construction commonly uses graded density — coarser at the outside, finer toward the core — while spun cartridges are more typically uniform.

The gradient means more dirt is held before the cartridge blocks, so melt blown usually runs longer at the same rating on a loaded feed.

Does a graded density cartridge cost more to run?

Usually less, on a high solids load. The cartridge price is higher but the run before change-out is longer, so cost per litre filtered generally falls.

On clean feed the advantage may never be realised, because neither cartridge blocks before other factors force a change.

Can melt blown cartridges be cleaned?

No. Like other depth cartridges they trap particles through the thickness of the media, and backwashing or washing does not reliably remove them.
