Flow measurement

Flow Meters for RO and Water Treatment Plants

Flow meters on an RO plant measure permeate, concentrate and feed flow. Those three readings, with pressure and conductivity, are what make normalised performance calculation possible — and without normalised data a plant cannot distinguish fouling from scaling or decide when to clean.

What Flow Meters Are, and How They Are Specified

Flow meters on an RO plant measure permeate, concentrate and feed flow. Those three readings, with pressure and conductivity, are what make normalised performance calculation possible — and without normalised data a plant cannot distinguish fouling from scaling or decide when to clean.

Flow measurement on an RO plant is diagnostic instrumentation, not just indication. Permeate and concentrate flow together give recovery; permeate flow trended against commissioning data at the same temperature and pressure gives normalised flow, which is one of the two numbers that decide when to clean.

Variable area meters, commonly called rotameters, are the usual choice on small and medium plants because they are inexpensive, need no power and are read directly. Electromagnetic and ultrasonic meters appear where the reading has to feed a control system or be logged.

Selection depends on line size, flow range, fluid conductivity and whether a signal output is required.

Selection guidance

An electromagnetic meter will not read RO permeate reliably

Electromagnetic flow meters work by measuring a voltage induced in a moving conductive fluid, and they need a minimum conductivity to do it. RO permeate at low microsiemens, and EDI or mixed bed product at megohm resistivity, are close to non-conductive by that standard.

This surprises people retrofitting instrumentation onto a high-purity line. On permeate and polished water, use variable area, paddle wheel, turbine or ultrasonic measurement instead, and keep electromagnetic meters for feed and concentrate where conductivity is ample.

How This Category Is Quoted

Water treatment does not have a list price, and any supplier quoting one before seeing a feed analysis is quoting a different plant from the one you need.

Pricing basis

On request, and capacity-dependent. Plant pricing moves with capacity, feed water analysis and the recovery target; membranes, cartridges and resins are quoted per element, per lot or per litre of media.

Order quantity

From a single replacement element or a case of cartridges through to full plant scope. Consumable lines are quoted per box or per lot, and the lot size is stated on the quotation.

Lead time

Confirmed per line item at quotation stage. Stocked consumable lines and made-to-order plant differ substantially, so a single blanket lead time for the category would be misleading — the quotation carries the figure for each line.

Invoicing

GST invoice against company or institutional purchase order. Proforma issued where advance payment or internal approval requires it.

Delivery coverage

Despatch from Delhi NCR across India, including plant, project and institutional sites. Delivery city and site access are asked for at enquiry because both affect despatch mode.

Documentation

Technical datasheet for the item quoted, and a test certificate where the principal supplies one with that product. Tender and institutional documentation formats are prepared on request — send the format with the enquiry so the quotation is issued in a form you can submit without rework.

Frequently asked

Flow Meters — Common Questions

Which flow meters does an RO plant need?

At minimum, permeate and concentrate flow. Those two give recovery directly, and permeate flow trended against commissioning data gives normalised flow.

Feed flow is useful as a cross-check. Together with pressure and conductivity, these are the readings that tell you whether to clean, adjust or replace.

Why does my electromagnetic flow meter not read on the permeate line?

Because electromagnetic meters need a minimum fluid conductivity to induce a measurable voltage, and RO permeate is often below it. Polished water from EDI or a mixed bed is further below it still.

Use variable area, paddle wheel, turbine or ultrasonic measurement on high-purity lines instead.

Do rotameters need to be mounted vertically?

Yes. A variable area meter relies on gravity acting on the float, so it must be mounted vertically with flow upward to read correctly.

Horizontally mounted rotameters are a common site error and give readings that look plausible but are meaningless.
