What Membrane Adapters Are, and How They Are Specified

Membrane adapters connect spiral-wound elements to each other and to the pressure vessel end caps. Interconnectors join the permeate tubes of adjacent elements within a multi-element vessel, end adapters connect the first and last elements to the vessel ports, and thrust rings prevent elements telescoping under flow.

Adapters are small parts whose failure is disproportionate. An interconnector O-ring that has been nicked during assembly allows feed to leak directly into the permeate tube, and the plant shows high permeate conductivity that looks exactly like a failed membrane.

That failure mode is worth knowing because it is cheap to fix and expensive to misdiagnose. Before condemning elements on high salt passage, probe the vessels and check the adapters and their O-rings.

Selection guidance

Replace adapter O-rings with every element change, without exception

Adapter O-rings cost very little and are the single most common cause of unexplained high permeate conductivity after an element change. An O-ring that has been compressed for three years and is then reused has taken a set, and it may seal on the bench and leak under pressure.

Keep a full seal kit on site — interconnector O-rings, end adapter O-rings and brine seals — and fit new ones every time the vessel is opened. The cost is trivial against the diagnostic time a leaking adapter consumes.

Pricing basis

On request, and capacity-dependent. Plant pricing moves with capacity, feed water analysis and the recovery target; membranes, cartridges and resins are quoted per element, per lot or per litre of media.

Order quantity

From a single replacement element or a case of cartridges through to full plant scope. Consumable lines are quoted per box or per lot, and the lot size is stated on the quotation.

Lead time

Confirmed per line item at quotation stage. Stocked consumable lines and made-to-order plant differ substantially, so a single blanket lead time for the category would be misleading — the quotation carries the figure for each line.

Invoicing

GST invoice against company or institutional purchase order. Proforma issued where advance payment or internal approval requires it.

Delivery coverage

Despatch from Delhi NCR across India, including plant, project and institutional sites. Delivery city and site access are asked for at enquiry because both affect despatch mode.

What does an RO membrane interconnector do?

It joins the permeate tubes of two adjacent elements inside a multi-element pressure vessel, so the permeate from each element is collected into a single flow path.

It carries O-rings that keep pressurised feed out of the permeate. A failed O-ring here allows feed to leak directly into the product water.

Why is my permeate conductivity high after replacing elements?

One of the most common causes is a damaged or reused adapter O-ring, or a brine seal fitted the wrong way round. Both allow feed to bypass into the permeate and both look like element failure.

Probe the vessels to identify which one is contributing, then inspect the adapters and seals before concluding the elements are at fault.

Are membrane adapters interchangeable between vessel brands?

Not reliably. Adapter design, dimensions and the port arrangement they mate with are vessel specific, even for the same element size.
