What Control Valves Are, and How They Are Specified

Control valves on a water treatment plant direct flow through service, backwash, regeneration and rinse cycles on media and softener vessels, and throttle concentrate and permeate on RO skids. They are specified by line size, pressure rating, actuation type and the cycle sequence the vessel requires.

Two quite different valve duties share the name. Multiport valves on FRP vessels sequence a media bed through service, backwash, regeneration and rinse; throttling valves on an RO skid set concentrate flow and therefore recovery.

The second of those is the one most often adjusted without appreciating its effect. The concentrate valve is what sets recovery on most small plants, and closing it to raise permeate output raises recovery at the same time — which can push the concentrate past its scaling limit.

Selection guidance

Do not chase permeate flow with the concentrate valve

When permeate output falls, the quickest apparent fix is to close the concentrate valve, which raises pressure and restores flow. What it also does is raise recovery, concentrating hardness, silica and sulphate further in the reject.

If the flow loss was caused by early scaling, this accelerates it. Check normalised flow, differential pressure and feed conditions before adjusting the concentrate valve, and treat a permanent change to its setting as a change to the plant design rather than an operational tweak.

Water treatment does not have a list price, and any supplier quoting one before seeing a feed analysis is quoting a different plant from the one you need.

Pricing basis

On request, and capacity-dependent. Plant pricing moves with capacity, feed water analysis and the recovery target; membranes, cartridges and resins are quoted per element, per lot or per litre of media.

Order quantity

From a single replacement element or a case of cartridges through to full plant scope. Consumable lines are quoted per box or per lot, and the lot size is stated on the quotation.

Lead time

Confirmed per line item at quotation stage. Stocked consumable lines and made-to-order plant differ substantially, so a single blanket lead time for the category would be misleading — the quotation carries the figure for each line.

Invoicing

GST invoice against company or institutional purchase order. Proforma issued where advance payment or internal approval requires it.

Delivery coverage

What does the concentrate valve on an RO plant do?

It throttles the concentrate line, which sets the back pressure on the array and therefore the split between permeate and concentrate — in other words, the recovery.

Closing it raises recovery as well as pressure. On a plant near its scaling limit that can cause the problem it appears to solve.

Should a softener have a manual or automatic control valve?

Automatic wherever regeneration would otherwise depend on somebody remembering. Metered automatic valves regenerate on volume treated, which suits variable demand better than a timer.

Manual valves are adequate on small, closely supervised installations where the cycle is part of a routine.

How is a multiport valve sized?

On backwash flow rather than service flow, since backwash is the higher-flow condition and an undersized valve will not fluidise the bed properly.

Vessel diameter and media type set the backwash rate, so the valve is selected once those are fixed.
